Self-tapping screws create their own threads but require a pilot hole. The oval head is very similar to a flat head screw but has a rounded surface. The phillips drive has a cross-shaped indent for use with a Phillips screwdriver. Black oxide steel offers mild corrosion resistance and essentially has no risk of hydrogen embrittlement.
