Self-tapping screws create their own threads but require a pilot hole. The flat head features a conical head and flat top, and it is countersunk for a smooth, flush surface. The 6-lobe drive, commonly referred to as Torx, has six points of contact allowing the operator to tighten the screw without stripping the recess. Black oxide steel offers mild corrosion resistance and essentially has no risk of hydrogen embrittlement.
