Carriage bolts feature a square or ribbed neck underneath the head of the fastener and a round head for smooth surface finishes. Carriage bolts are used to bond wood to wood, wood to metal, and sometimes metal to metal. The round head has a domed head, a smaller surface bearing, and protrudes above the fastening surface. Ribbed necks, also known as knurled necks, feature vertical ribs that are wider than the bolt diameter instead of a square neck. Ribbed necks prevent the bolt from turning when the nut is tightened or loosened. 18-8 stainless steel, also commonly known as 304 or A2 stainless steel, has good chemical resistance and may be mildly magnetic.
