Carriage bolts feature a square or ribbed neck underneath the head of the fastener and a round head for smooth surface finishes. Carriage bolts are used to bond wood to wood, wood to metal, and sometimes metal to metal. The round head has a domed head, a smaller surface bearing, and protrudes above the fastening surface. Square necks are the standard for carriage bolts. Square necks are designed to prevent the bolt from turning as the nut is tightened. 316 stainless steel, also commonly known as A4 stainless steel, is more corrosion resistant than 18-8 stainless steel and has excellent resistance to chemicals and salt water.
