What is ABS Plastic?

 

Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) is a thermoplastic polymer used to manufacture some of the most durable and widely used plastic products on the market. It has high chemical resistance, impact resistance, and offers excellent dimensional stability. 

 

ABS is often chosen for injection molding and 3D printing because of its properties as a thermoplastic and low melting temperature. It is desirable because it won’t degrade when melted and reused, translating to little or zero material waste.

Automotive: ABS is commonly used in place of metal for vehicle parts such as dashboards, wheel covers, instrument panels, and trimmings. They offer strong performance at a much lower weight. 

 

Aerospace: Aircrafts utilize this plastic for components like overhead luggage bins, internal and external signage, seat parts, and cargo containers.

 

Food and Beverage: ABS is FDA-compliant for applications requiring contact with food. It is frequently selected for use in kitchen appliances and food packaging. 

 

Medical and Pharmaceutical: The biocompatibility of ABS plastic makes it ideal for these industries. It is often used for protective cases and housings for medical devices.

 

Construction: Due to its high impact strength and resistance to rust and corrosion, ABS is frequently used for pipes and fittings. It is also commonly found in power tool components. 

 

Electronics: ABS plastic is used for electronic components such as keyboards, device enclosures, small appliances, and much more.
