Carriage bolts feature a square or ribbed neck underneath the head of the fastener and a round head for smooth surface finishes. Carriage bolts are used to bond wood to wood, wood to metal, and sometimes metal to metal. The round head has a domed head, a smaller surface bearing, and protrudes above the fastening surface. Short square necks are designed to prevent the bolt from turning as the nut is tightened. Short square necks are used when the standard square neck would create an obstruction which usually occurs when joining thin materials. Zinc plated steel offers good corrosion resistance in applications not exposed to excessive moisture.
