Heavy hex bolts feature a larger and thicker head which spreads the load over a wider area and conform to specific ASTM standards that are rated for high load applications requiring very high tensile strengths. Like other hex bolts, heavy hex bolts have a flat surface underneath the head, a flat point, and requires a nut. The hex head has an external hex head that protrudes above the surface. The external hex drive is designed to be used with a ratchet.
