Carriage bolts feature a square or ribbed neck underneath the head of the fastener and a round head for smooth surface finishes. Carriage bolts are used to bond wood to wood, wood to metal, and sometimes metal to metal. The round head has a domed head, a smaller surface bearing, and protrudes above the fastening surface. Square necks are the standard for carriage bolts.
